General anaesthesiaGeneral anaesthesia is a treatment that renders the patient unconscious during surgical procedures. The patient doesn't feel pain or remember anything during that time procedures.
General anaesthesia is commonly produced by a combination of intravenous drugs and inhaled gases (anaesthetics). During the state of general anaesthesia, the brain doesn't respond to pain signals or surgical manipulations. It is far different from sleep. During of general anaesthesia, the anaesthetist controls the patient’s breathing and monitors his/her vital functions till the patient after the surgery when the patient regains consciousness. General anaesthesia is administered by a specially trained doctor called an anaesthesiologist.

Long standing chronic pain is one of the challenges of the modern age. Wrong lifestyle habits lead to a plethora of pain conditions which need pain management. Painful conditions of cancer, severe painfully conditions like wounds andpost surgical pain are treated appropriately. Long standing pain which does not respond to routine oral analgesics are treated with local anaesthetic injections. This reduces pain and makes the patient’s life more comfortable.

Types of anaesthesia
This depends on the patient’s medical status and type of procedure or surgery to be performed.
- General Anaesthesia - Patient is unconscious
- Regional Anaesthesia - patient is conscious. A local aesthetic is injected by the anaesthesiologist to make selected part/s of the body pain free for a limited time. This is used for pain control during or after procedure.
- The patient is closely monitored for the duration of his Anaesthesia. His/her vitals are constantly checked and interventions done as needed.

Pre anaesthesia check up
The anaesthesiologist usually meets the patient prior to surgery. They discuss the medical history, lab results and anaesthesia plan. The patient and his/her relatives are informed about the risks and benefits of anaesthesia and their consent for the procedure is taken.
In the OT an anaesthetist will be with the patient throughout the procedure.
After the procedure patient will be moved to the recovery room and a nurse will monitor the patient and provide medication to minimize pain, nausea and vomiting as needed. The patient will be transferred from the recovery room to the ICU, ward or private rooms only after the anaesthetist ascertains that the patient is stable and comfortable.
